Desiderata Revisited (September 9-13, 2002)
With humble apologies to Max Erhmann, who wrote the original Desiderata in 1927.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Go placidly amid the need and waste,
and maintain that peace may be found in violence.
As far as possible, without concessions, negotiate unequal terms with all persons.
Speak your lies proudly and fearlessly; ignore others,
they are dull and ignorant, and fuck up your logic.
Seek wealthy and powerful alliances to bolster your PR.
When comparing yourself with others, be insulting and self-righteous
for always ‘they’ will be lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy the censorship of your media.
Buy commemorative editions of last year’s news
and read your story in the pages of People and Time
Exercise no caution in your political affairs; the world is full of fools.
But let this not blind you to what they want:
many persons strive for more; their lives are full of avarice.
Advertise what they seek. Charge interest.
Neither be cynical about patriotism;
for in the face of fixed votes and Florida
it is perennial as BC grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the state, gratefully surrendering your thoughts.
Nurture strength of rhetoric to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with facts.
you are not afraid, and
you have the T-shirt to prove it.
You are a child of the first world, possessor of trees and of stars;
you have the right to buy here.
And as your patriarchy has made clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore, be at peace with God, defend him against the heathens,
and whatever your actions and desires, as long as you love your country,
who needs a soul?
With all its farce, exploitation and reality TV, it is such a distracting world.
Be willfully ignorant. Go back for more.
