Sweet Caroline

I’m not coming, Montreal, but The Syringa Tree is, and that is so much better you’ll never miss me. I decree that the entire city shall go see Caroline Cave play 24 people, some black, some white, during 60′s Apartheid in South Africa (most wonderfully a 6 year old girl you are disoriented and sad to realize has aged toward the end of the show), and be awed. Her one prop: a rope swing, hanging from the ceiling. November 2007. Write it down. Prepare to count yourself lucky to have gone.
Laur and I went to see the final show here at the Vancouver Playhouse on Saturday. I wish I’d gone before Saturday, because I want to go again, and take everyone I know.
(8:15 – Canucks just scored against Dallas, seventh game, it is 2-1, fifteen minutes left, and the celebration at New Year’s doesn’t last this long. Holy crap.)
My mother called me this afternoon to tell me she was dropping a deposit off for work this afternoon when the bank was robbed. She didn’t really notice anything (she said, “You know me, I never notice what’s going on around me…”) but some man in a ski mask got away with a bunch of bills and some red dye, she’d had to stick around and write out a report and she was having a few drinks before dinner to settle her nerves. She didn’t ask what the world was coming to but she did wonder aloud how things might have been if he’d had a gun. She also read me my horoscope for the week, which she has never done before, though she has sometimes cut the one for the year out and put it in our birthday cards. Her message on my machine was, “Call me back, I was at the bank when it got robbed this afternoon [laughter] and I want to read you your horoscope, because it’s really good!”* Apparently she has Georgia Nichols bookmarked. There are so many unexpected things one learns as an adult about one’s mother.

* Leo – You’re in the limelight attracting people and opportunities. However, this next month is very future oriented. You’re thinking a lot about what you want to achieve in the next few years. Although you might be involved with parents more than usual, in the main, you’re thinking about your role in society, your reputation and your career. You’re very people oriented as well! You want to schmooze, especially with artistic types. And – ta da! — Mars is revving up your sex drive (something no Leo takes lightly.) Give yourself permission to have fun. Despite your personal ambitions, this is your year for rest and relaxation. Take a vacation!
